DRAGON RIDER

Dragon Rider: Image

On Dragon Rider I worked as an environment and lighting artist. On two sequences of the film, I dealt with all sections of the pipeline from modeling to lighting and render setup. One of the sequences involved building a 1.5 kilometer long ice cave and the other was a montage sequence which shows the protagonists journey. The latter involved building environments for almost every shot, most of them combined with matte paintings.

Below are samples of my work on the film. Next to the two large sequences I helmed, I helped out in several other sectiony of the film. I added visual effects after other studios had delivered their shots, created the 3D procedural setup for the prologue sequence that turned two dimensional animations into back lit paper lanterns. I also built a library of 3D clouds that was used by other studios as well.

I was involved in the creation of all the promotional material for the film. Many of the screenshots used were taken from my sequences and I lit and rendered all the characters for the posters and banners.

This shot is part of the montage sequence of the film. I built a very simple particle system that created the falling rain and in addition I randomly  spawned little "splashes" on all surfaces pointing upwards. Another system created a trail behind the characters. A very simple setup, no calculation of collision required. The simplicity of the effect in combination with the strong lighting makes this one of my favourite shots in the film.

Another shot from the montage sequence. I was able to build my own ecosystem tool for Houdini, which made my work a lot easier. Its task was simply to control in which way the different elements of the environment like trees, bushes, grass or rocks influence each others placement. I am hoping to be able to present a breakdown of my work soon.
